You have to start with a base color first like red. Otherwise, it will look muddy.

Since you don't have a lot of experience, I would really advise going to a professional for color correction.

Check with a local beauty supply store for a Filler. You have to apply this to already lightened hair before it will hold any color at all..Also...avoid any colors with the word Ash in the description..You'll end up with a greenish tinge.

BEEN THERE%26lt; DONE THAT!!!!

DO NOT use a color that says "ash" it may turn your hair green! Also, don't use any auburn or golden tones either, they may come out too brassy (orange) and those colors wash out the fastest. Use a color that says MED. BROWN and that's it. It may take a couple times for the color to sink in because of the drying damage from the bleach, so color your hair then wait a week and color again. Leave the new dye on your hair for a slightly shorter time than recommended too.

You do not have to color it red first. It should be okay. Highlighting it probably isn't the best thing to do and that's probably is why it became all patchy. If you are going to do it yourself, I agree and don't use a color that has ash in it. Use a rich color and make sure you get it evenly and all over. The best thing to get perfect results is to go to a stylist. Which depending on where you live can range from like 40-60 dollars. But it's a sure way to get good results.

Good luck!

oh wow i know exactly how you feeeeeeeeel.

i had brown hair, and wanted it to be higlighted but my hair turned a brassy orangey yellow, and at the top it was speckelled, looked like cheetah spots near my roots and nothing was the same color.

then a day later i tried dyeing it brown again and it turned BRIGHT orange. like the color of an orange (the fruit) haha.

but you have to wait a few weeks :S then if you dye if brown, it should work.

thats what i did. but it washed out within days, and left the roots green for a few days (where my natural color had been) but that faded away too.

its a MUCH more toleratble color now. just a lighttt brown, almost blonde. and my hair grew a few inches, so its all even at the roots too.

gooood luck!

but for a simple solution, i suggest (if you know a good recommended colorist) and have enough money, go visit a professional in a few days.

As the person above said, I would suggest a "filler". The hair is like a sponge with a ton of little pores that soak up everything. When you bleach it as you did, it becomes even more porous. Which means it will soak up color really really well, however it will also let it out fast and it will be faded. So the lightest parts of your hair (the ends) will soak up more of the haircolor than the rest of your hair. So this is the area you'll want to apply a filler. The idea is if you fill the porous hair up with something else, it can't soak up more color than the rest of your hair so it will be even all over. A lot of things can act as fillers as well, like conditioner for example.

Coat the lightest parts of your hair with the filler, apply the haircolor (it doesn't matter what tone because lightest blonde hair is a clean slate that will be true to the color that you choose, it won't turn weird colors) to the roots and midsections of your hair first. Wait 15 minutes and then run the remaining color through the rest of your hair and leave for another 15 minutes before washing the color out.

I've attended beauty school and experienced these mistakes many times myself. So I hope this helps and everything turns out okay! If it's not perfectly one color all over the first time, you can have a colorist fix it or apply a semi permanant color over it a week or so later to help even it out. Just please don't pick a color that's too dark because your hair will soak it up so well that it might be darker than you expect. If yours is white blonde then it is what we call a level 10 or 11 (being the lightest hair color) and for medium brown you want to shoot for a level 6 or 7, so I'd try a 7 first. These numbers are usually found on the haircolors you buy.

color correction. it is always better to go dark to fix a problem. if you dye your hair a dark brown it will look better. it will not turn green! my cousin did the same thing to my hair when she highlighted it and to fix it we just dyed it dark brown to cover up her mess. the only side-effect is that you will have dark brown hair with medium brown/light brown highlights which would be the blonde highlights she did to begin with. but it looks way better!
