If they are synthetic, then you probably can't dye them. There are only a few specially designed synthetic ones that can be dyed.

If the extensions are human hair you can dye them, but you should not lift the color from the hair. So, you probably won't be able to make your brown extensions blond, because this would require you to lift the color to make them lighter.

I would suggest that you dye your own hair, to either match your extensions or dye them to complement your extensions -- giving it a highlight (or lowlight) effect and this will add depth to the color.

Do you go to see a hairdresser? I would say to bring your extensions with you and see what he/she says, and they'll certainly be able to provide the best help for choosing a color if you do decide to dye your hair.

if hair extensions are made of real hair, then use hair dye

Do you know what they are made of? If it's natural hair, then you can just go get a box of hair dye. If it's synthetic hair, then, unfortunitely, you cannot lighten them (believe me, I've tried before)
